Young Volunteers Support the Sherman County Depot Museum

by Julie Parker

Twelve-year-old Kash Frische wants to be a history teacher when he grows up.
The young Frische volunteers with the Sherman County Depot Museum, providing guided tours for visitors.
“I’ve always loved history, and it was a really good opportunity [to volunteer at the museum],” said Frische, explaining that his work will assist him not just with historical knowledge but possible future scholarships.
The sixth grader initially visited the museum in May, 2023, to view both his brother’s, Kyler, and his cousin’s artwork displays. At that time, museum volunteer Cece Yelek requested volunteers from the group of youths, so Frische committed to help.
After working over a year as a museum tour guide, Yelek invited Frische to attend a board meeting of the Sherman County Historical Society, making an appeal to the board to add the young man to the group. In September, 2024, Frische officially joined the board, making him one of the youngest members ever to serve.
Frische is the youngest child of Flynn and Britni Frische, but as a twin, he is only one minute younger than his sister, Brylee.
Being homeschooled, the budding historian has time to focus more on learning his interests. He prefers to finish his schoolwork quickly so that he can tackle his household chores, spending the rest of his day with his own pursuits. He may be found researching, volunteering, or hanging out with fellow homeschooled friends.
Because history is his favorite subject, Frische has a keen fascination with deceased English kings and queens, especially King Henry VIII and his daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, queen of the last House of Tudor. Additionally, Frische has been absorbed in learning mythology . His preferred character among Norse mythology is Loki, the god of mischief, and his favorite Greek personality is Athena, the goddess of war and wisdom.
The Sherman County Depot Museum is located at 17 North Main Street in the 1930 depot building. The structure was originally located on the Santa Fe Railroad. Visiting hours are Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. or by appointment.
Amarillo’s Channel 10’s “Ruben on the Road” paid a visit to the museum in August, interviewing both Frische and Yelek as well as Ann Wells, another volunteer. The video is available on Facebook’s “Ruben on the Road.”
The Sherman County Historical Society meets the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the museum. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. For more information, call Cece Yelek at 806-290-3655.
